Pit River Fly Fishing with Drifting Waters

A Unique Fly Fishing Experience in Northern California

Fly fishing the Pit River offers a rare combination of wild scenery, strong fish, and technical water. At Drifting Waters, you will experience the river from a uniquely equipped raft, guided by a seasoned expert who has spent decades fishing and rowing this very stretch. Whether you are a first-time fly fisher or a long-time enthusiast, this guided experience provides a mix of education, action, and the peace that only a true wilderness float can offer.

The Pit River is not a float trip in the traditional sense. It features swift water, technical rapids, and remote stretches that demand skill and preparation. With the right guide, however, it becomes one of the most rewarding rivers in California for fly fishing.

Why the Pit River Stands Out

The Pit River flows from the Warner Mountains and is fed by a series of cold springs. It maintains a consistent flow throughout the year, providing a healthy habitat for wild rainbow trout. These fish are known for being aggressive, acrobatic, and strong fighters. Hooking one requires accuracy, patience, and solid technique. Landing one is an experience to remember.

This river is not crowded or heavily pressured. Instead, you will often feel like you have the entire canyon to yourself. The landscape is rugged and beautiful, and the sounds of rushing water and bird calls replace the noise of daily life.

Our Fishing Techniques

Bill Schmunk, owner and guide at Drifting Waters, has been perfecting his approach to fly fishing on the Pit River for over 25 years. The main method used on this river is nymphing with two flies and an indicator. This technique is ideal for the river’s boulder-strewn structure and fast current.

Throughout the trip, Bill will coach you on how to read seams, adjust your rig, set your depth, and identify productive holding water. Instruction is available for anglers at any skill level, and each lesson is tailored to your experience and interests.

We only use indicator fishing with nymphs. No dry fly fishing is offered. While seasonal hatches of stoneflies, mayflies, and caddisflies occur, the most consistent success comes from subsurface presentations.

Trip Details and Inclusions

Each guided trip is conducted from a 13-foot raft configured with a rowing frame and two angler stations, one in the front and one in the rear. This setup allows anglers to cast from a stable platform while drifting and also provides access to more remote water.

Trips are limited to two people, allowing for focused instruction and a more enjoyable pace. Safety is always the top priority, especially when navigating Class II rapids or when stepping out of the raft to wade prime runs.
