About Drifting Waters – Your Local Pit River Fly Fishing Guide
A Deep Connection to the Pit River
Drifting Waters is more than just a guide service. It is a reflection of decades spent learning, living, and fishing along the Pit River in Northern California. Located in the Intermountain region between Mount Shasta and Lassen National Park, Drifting Waters is owned and operated by fly fishing guide Bill Schmunk, a local expert with over 25 years of guiding experience and more than 30 years of residence in the area.
Bill is not part of a large outfitter or commercial operation. Drifting Waters is intentionally small and independent, allowing Bill to provide truly personalized trips to anglers of all skill levels. Whether you are brand new to fly fishing or have years of experience, you will receive focused attention and thoughtful instruction in a setting that is peaceful, exciting, and authentic.

A Guide Who Knows the River
What makes Drifting Waters unique is not only its location or access to productive waters, but the depth of knowledge Bill brings to every trip. He has guided hundreds of anglers on the same 3.5-mile stretch of the Pit River, developing an intimate familiarity with every run, seam, pocket, and drop-off.
As a licensed and bonded California guide, Bill prioritizes safety, education, and enjoyment. His style is laid-back and approachable, and he adjusts his approach to meet your needs. If you are a beginner, you will learn the fundamentals of casting, line management, and presentation. If you are experienced, you can expect strategic guidance to help unlock the river’s most challenging water.
Our Philosophy – Ethical and Enjoyable Fly Fishing
Drifting Waters is a catch-and-release, fly fishing only guide service. This commitment helps protect the health and sustainability of the Pit River’s wild trout population, ensuring that future generations of anglers can enjoy the same high-quality experience.
The primary fishing method used is nymphing with an indicator and two flies, which has proven highly effective for targeting wild rainbow trout in the river’s complex currents and rocky terrain. While other methods are sometimes used based on season and conditions, nymphing remains the most consistent and productive technique on this stretch of river.
Trips are conducted in a
13-foot raft equipped like a drift boat, allowing access to remote and otherwise inaccessible water. This style of fishing includes both
drifting and getting out to wade, depending on conditions and angler preference. The river includes both smooth water and
Class II whitewater sections, making for a dynamic but manageable adventure.
What to Expect on Your Trip
A typical day with Drifting Waters begins with a riverside meetup and shuttle service to the launch point. You will float through canyon scenery while learning the rhythms of the water and honing your fly presentation. Expect to spot wildlife such as bald eagles, ospreys, and other species that thrive in this remote corridor.
Bill keeps trips flexible, safe, and tailored to your pace. Along the way, you will receive tips on reading water, setting up rigs, managing drift, and improving your accuracy. He will also take care of boat positioning, gear setup, and provide thoughtful instruction when needed.
Whether you are looking for a peaceful float or hoping to land a powerful rainbow trout in heavy current, the trip will be adapted to match your goals and comfort level.
Drifting Waters provides all the equipment necessary for a successful day on the river. You are welcome to bring your own gear, but it is not required.
